2015 – The Year of Awesome Success, Too Many Goodbyes and One Snapped Neck

2015 was a year that saw me enjoy the best summer of my adult life and bid farewell to a bunch of people, the capital region, a relationship that came with two awesome cats, an awesome apartment and a very important corner of the net, and finished with my luck finally running out in the form of one broken neck.

The Summer of Marine Biology – aka The Best Summer Ever

I have spent this summer working as a nature surveyor and a scientific diver for Metsähallitus, a state apparatus which is responsible for the protected areas in nature as well as dealing with forestry. A job like this is something I’ve been working towards for some time now. Do you know that feeling of really wanting something and building it up as you wait for things to happen – and when you get in, it’s even more awesome than you expected? I do now.

Slices of Life: Singing Factory & Shallow Water

July 11, 2015 · Posted in Diving, Marine Biology, Science!, Slices of Life, Work · Comment

I’m wading in knee high dark water pulling the boat after me when the factory sings out again across the strait. A flute-like mechanical sound, vaguely melodic, but not quite. Like someone had sampled a gale whistling in the structures of an abandoned factory, and played an atonal melody with it while throwing in a bit of vox humana. I stop to listen.
