The Awesome Year of 2010

December 30, 2010 · Posted in Caving, Diving, Life, Making Movies, Urban Exploration · Comment

I once heard someone say that when you are 35, you should be on the high point of your life, professionally and otherwise. I don’t put much weight on comments like that, but then again, looking back at this year I have to say that it has probably been the most interesting and activity filled in my whole life. There have been very interesting work trips, even more interesting holiday adventures, after a ten year pause I’ve written some fiction and got it published, and so on. It has also been a year of extremes in many ways, not so much good without something bad.

Wreck Diving in Åland, Part II

August 13, 2010 · Posted in Diving · 2 Comments

Susi and I decided to end our Awesome July of 2010 by going to Åland to dive some wrecks, like we did last year. This time we were accompanied again by Gunnar, Christina, Jukka and Hakkis, but also Jori and Ville who are of a slightly fresher batch of divers.

On our way to Åland we heard that the weather wasn’t quite as great as it was the last time, and the wind went up to 10 m/s on the sea, which is quite a lot. On the way to Åland the ferry got hit by quite an impressive thunderstorm, which didn’t bode that well.

Thunder

On our way to Åland, we ran into a pretty massive thunderstorm with some impressive cloud formations.

In the end the wind was too heavy to go to the open sea, so this time around we didn’t get to see Belliver or Gävle. We stayed two days in Plus, which is the “home wreck” of the dive operator. It’s a nice three mast sailing ship that sunk very close to the shoreline, and which is shielded from the worst of the winds. Nevertheless the going was a bit rocky both over the surface and under water.

Cave Diving – Kaatiala Quarry

April 25, 2010 · Posted in Diving · 6 Comments

Susi and I had barely got our diving gear dry from our trip to Zenobia before it was the time to leave for another dive, this time to check out Kaatiala Quarry and try out some cave diving. The quarry was operational in 1942-1968 and it produced quartz and feldspar, but after it was closed down people still collected stones that were used for jewelry. The quarry is about 200 meters wide and 30 meters deep, and it has a small cave system that reaches some 85 meters into the stone horizontally, about 40 meters deep.
