Midsummer Island Trip Feat. Kids, Bugs & Pancakes

This year I decided to hit the eject button and escape to the Eastern Finland for the traditional Juhannus midsummer festival. Instead of partying in the city or having a fancy barbecue with pals what was in the books was a couple of days in a tent in an island with two of my oldest friends, Juha and Jere, and Juha’s three elementary school age kids.

Not quite The Midnight Sun. Well, 10pm sun anyway.

Bad Characterization in The Scifi of Big Ideas – Who Gives A Crap, Really?

Charles Stross has turned out to be one of my favorite scifi writers from the last few years, and his rant about the scifi of big ideas made me like the dude even more. This is a thing that has started to annoy me more and more lately – whinging about bad characters in books, where the main character is obviously The Idea or the setting.

Mood Pieces: Dear Esther – High Literature Meets 3D Gaming

This installment of Mood Pieces is about an experimental game called Dear Esther, which was originally published as a Source engine mod, but which is currently available from Steam for both PC and Mac. Dear Esther is an experimental game which manages to mix high literature with the motions of 3D gaming.
