Company Sailing Trip

Our company’s spring picnic was a bit different this year. Quite often generic company fun days seem to be just about going to a restaurant to grab a steak and two to twelve beers, but this time we went for a few hour sailing trip on the sea in front of Helsinki.

I wasn’t feeling too well during the day and couldn’t tell if it was allergy or an incoming flu. Late in the afternoon I was feeling so shitty I was ready to skip the whole thing and started off for home. Getting out of the hot and stuffy work room into fresh and cool air and grabbing some medication made me feel well enough to grab a cab and arrive at the pier in the last moment before the boat left.

Before this I’ve been on and piloted only small and mid-size motored boats and a catamaran, so it was my first time on a sailing boat. Getting into a good wind where the boat tilted enough for one side to be pretty much on level with the waves was really fun. Everybody had a chance to try their hand in piloting the boat, but I had started to feel too feverish and achy to trust myself on the helm, so I settled on watching the beautiful seascape and wondering, if we were going past any familiar diving sites.

More pictures in Flickr, once again.

Urban Exploration: An Abandoned Paper Mill

May 25, 2009 · Posted in Urban Exploration · Comment

The target of this UE Sunday was and old paper mill that was abandoned in 2006. The mill had been operational for almost 110 years, from 1897 to 2006.

On the way the weather was beautiful – the sky was full of enormous cumulus clouds, everything was fresh and green. I stopped on the way to buy some smoked salmon and ham from a small roadside shop. When speeding on the sunny highway, blasting Soul Captain Band and Skream I had this nice feeling that all is good in the world.

When I arrived to the site, there was a distant rumble of thunder and half of the sky was sunny, half of it covered with clouds. If I had arrived an hour or so earlier, I would have probably caught the place in a very beautiful light, but now the cloudy weather won.

It’s always nice to get reminders that you aren’t physically in as sucky shape as you think. Good to know that in spite of the 15 kg extra I lug around as fat, a 2,5 meter high fence is not that big an obstacle.

UPDATE: I just got a very nice and friendly call from the people responsible for the area, who asked me to pull down the photos. A shame, but what can you do. They might pop back up later, but it remains to be seen.

UPDATE 2: Now that the building is torn down, I made the decision to put the pictures back up – see the full photoset here.

May Thunder

May 19, 2009 · Posted in Life · Comment

It was in mid May when we got the first thunderstorm of the year. After it was over, half of the sky was deep blue, half covered with leaden gray clouds, sun shining from under them.

I love this kind of weather and the sight of the world glowing in a golden sunshine against a backdrop of menacing clouds.
